JAMES F. HANN is engaged exclusively in intellectual property counseling, primarily involving preparation and prosecution of patent applications, and analysis of the scope and validity of patents in a variety of settings, including licensing, litigation and strategic planning. The primary technical focus of his practice relates to medical devices, including catheters, drug delivery devices, stents, tumor removal devices, radiation therapy devices, etc. He is also actively involved in obtaining patent protection in other areas of technology such as photovoltaic systems, vehicle shock absorbers and watercraft sails. He is experienced in a wide range of other technologies, ranging from integrated circuit manufacturing technology to methods for producing raisins. Mr. Hann is also active in protecting ornamental designs through the use of design patents.
BSME with Distinction, MS in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1971 and 1973), Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma; JD from Hastings College of the Law (1977). Admitted to practice law in California (1977). Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (1979).

May, 1979 - October, 2000: associate and later partner with Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP in the San Francisco and Palo Alto offices; head of mechanical prosecution group at Townsend.
Mr. Hann has served as vice president of Inventors of California, an arbitrator for the Bar Association of San Francisco's Attorney-Client Fee Dispute Committee and a Director (1991-1999) of PilotLegis, a professional liability risk purchasing group for mid-sized law firms.
