BILL KENNEDY joined Haynes Beffel & Wolfeld LLP as Of Counsel in August 2001. Mr. Kennedy is engaged exclusively in intellectual property counseling, involving preparation and prosecution of patent applications, intellectual property portfolio management, and analysis of the scope and validity of patents. Mr. Kennedy counsels clients in a wide range of technical areas, including: chemical analysis, particularly for example liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, microfluidics and biomolecular arrays; biomedical technologies, including medical instruments and devices, particularly for drug delivery, diagnostics, and surgery; and materials, particularly organic and bio-organic polymers and microelectronics, and including nanoscale technologies. Mr. Kennedy also has extensive experience in biotechnologies, including molecular biology, immunology and genetics.   

Mr. Kennedy holds a B.A. in Biology from Stanford University, an M.A. in Biology from the University of California, and a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law. Admitted to practice law in Massachusetts, and registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Before joining Haynes Beffel & Wolfeld LLP Mr. Kennedy was Of Counsel with Hickman Coleman & Hughes LLP, and was later a Partner at the firm of Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly LLP, following a merger of the Hickman firm with the Oppenheimer firm. Mr. Kennedy began his career as an associate attorney in 1986 with the Boston firm of Fish & Richardson, and then assisted in starting up the Patent Group at the Boston firm of Choate, Hall & Stewart. He returned to California in 1992 as an associate attorney at Morrison & Foerster in Palo Alto, and he has worked as patent counsel at Cygnus, Inc. in Redwood City and at HP/Agilent in Palo Alto.

Mr. Kennedy is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association; and is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Academy for the Advancement of Science.
